STUDY ABROAD IN ITALY: UNIVERSITY PROGRAMS IN ROME
Torre di Babele works directly with university faculty and study abroad program administrators to develop credit and non-credit courses in Italy. Courses are designed for university students interested in broadening their linguistic and cultural knowledge through an academic experience abroad. The study abroad programs provide an international environment where personal attention is given to each student’s needs.
Torre di Babele operates year round and welcomes American university students for academic and special interest programs at any time of year, offering a wide range of courses and student services combined with a welcoming atmosphere.
Three types of study abroad programs are offered:
STUDY ABROAD: SUMMER PROGRAM IN ROME
ITALIAN LANGUAGE AND CULTURE - CLASSICAL AND MODERN CIVILIZATION

The summer program is open to students with little or no knowledge of Italian, as well as those with advanced proficiency. STUDY ABROAD PROGRAM FEATURES
Both Summer and Semester Programs include:
ITALIAN LANGUAGE COURSES
Italian language courses are offered at all levels, from beginner to advanced and skills perfection. Classes are made up of a maximum of 12 students, grouped according to their level of communication skills in Italian. University program students are integrated into classes with other students at the school, creating multinational classrooms in which Italian is the common language. Language classes are based on the communicative approach, which centers on the student, stressing the student’s communicative needs and the development of cognitive abilities, rather than applying a more formal, analytical style of instruction. The full range of language skills are addressed: listening, speaking, reading, writing.
All courses are taught by highly trained instructors specializing in the teaching of Italian as a foreign language. The teaching staff is directed by a curriculum coordinator, who also supervises the development of texts and continually updated teaching materials. A test is administered weekly to monitor each student’s progress. At the end of the course, students are given an oral exam to test their communicative competency – their listening and reading comprehension, oral expression and pronunciation.
CULTURAL STUDIES COMPONENT
Throughout the length of their stay, students participate in a cultural program outside the language classroom. This includes seminars, lectures, guided tours and field trips covering a range of subjects: Italian history, history of art, architecture, cinema, music, opera, theater and literature, as well as Italian cooking and wines. Excursions to other cities of interest are offered throughout the program: Orvieto, Naples and Pompeii, Florence, Siena, etc.
CONVERSATION EXCHANGE
Throughout the program, all students can take part in our unique TANDEM conversation exchange with a native Italian speaker. This language exchange facilitates comprehension and expands vocabulary, while providing the opportunity to practice real conversation outside the classroom with a native speaker.
ACCOMMODATION IN ROME
Accommodations are available in private homes with Italians, or with other students in single and double rooms. All apartments are centrally located and offer cooking
facilities. Half board service (breakfast and dinner) can also be arranged.
LANGUAGE OF INSTRUCTION: ITALIAN
Instruction also in English for certain subject
area courses.
